Since the summer of 2021, Rancho El Chapa has brought one of Mexico’s most vibrant traditions to life: jaripeo. Every year in Washington County, PA, this high-energy event fills the arena with the thrill of bull riding, the beat of live music, the aroma of authentic Mexican food, and the joy of dancing—all creating a festive experience for the Hispanic community and everyone who loves cultural celebrations.
“The idea for the jaripeo was mine—I’ve always loved it,” says Fernando Sánchez, the event’s lead organizer. “Back in Michoacán, I helped organize jaripeos in our hometown. We wanted to bring a piece of Mexico to people here who can’t travel back but still carry that love for jaripeo.”
With help from his nephew Guillermo Ambriz, a close friend, and his own children, Sánchez has grown this tradition year after year.

The jaripeo season at Rancho El Chapa usually kicks off in late May, though this year’s started on June 7 and runs through September 20. Each show features about 10 adrenaline-pumping bull rides.
Jaripeo blends elements of rodeo and Mexican cowboy tradition, where riders face off against fierce bulls, holding on for dear life as the animals do everything they can to buck them off. The excitement starts at 4:00 p.m. with live music accompanying each ride. The energy builds with the crowd’s cheers, the jingle of spurs, and the thunder of hooves. Skilled riders, full of courage and grit, turn every bull ride into a show to remember. Around 8:00 p.m., the evening closes with a dance party and a live band.
Organizers handpick the bulls for their toughness, bringing them in from ranches across the country. This year’s opening featured bulls from Rancho La Herradura in North Carolina. Other bulls come from Kansas, Arkansas, Florida, Chicago, New Jersey, and California. Most of the riders live in the U.S., but about 90% come from Mexico—keeping the tradition firmly rooted in its cultural heritage.

Each jaripeo offers more than just a show—vendors sell cowboy hats, western wear, traditional goods, Mexican food, beer, and beverages. With games and activities for kids, the whole family can enjoy the day. The entire event feels like a mini Mexican fiesta.
