The Customs and Border Patrol – CBP One App – meant to help process migrants seeking to apply for asylum in the U.S. was suddenly shut down on Monday, Jan. 20.
According to reports, the Customs and Border Protection agency posted a notice on its website informing users that the app was no longer available. It also said that existing appointments at the eight ports of entry across the Southwest had been canceled.
“Members of the Pennsylvania Legislative Latino Caucus express their concern over the halting of the legal process of immigration for asylum seekers,” said PLLC Chair Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz, D-Berks, on behalf of the caucus. “We ask our federal partners in Congress to work with federal immigration authorities to restore service to the app – immediately.”
“When it comes to immigration, far too often we do not live up to the words enshrined in our founding documents – let alone in the words enshrined on the statue of liberty: ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…’”
“Today thousands of asylum seekers – coming in the right way – just had the door shut right on their faces.”
