Owning a car can be convenient, but it can also come with significant costs. Initially, purchasing a vehicle can represent a considerable investment. The average price of a used car is around $16,800, although this cost can vary depending on the year, mileage, and other variables. In addition to the acquisition cost, other recurring expenses such as fuel, insurance, parking, as well as annual inspections and repairs must be considered.

In comparison, public transportation offers an alternative that can be cheaper in some cases. However, it is important to note some differences. For example, public transportation tends to take longer than driving a car. Also routes may be limited and subject to change. Additionally, you may have to walk to the stop and then from the stop to your final destination.

In Pittsburgh, the cost of a bus ride is $2.75 if you pay cash. However, getting a ConnectCard may be more advantageous in the long run, as it allows transfers within a three-hour window and offers the option of purchasing a monthly pass that can help you save money.

Below is a table comparing some of the estimated costs associated with both options. It is important to keep these differences in mind when considering whether buying a car or using public transportation is the best option for you.
