Summer means sunshine, relaxation, and fun… but it can also be a real challenge for families when the kids are home all day. Without school, routines, or structured activities, little ones can wear down even the most patient adult. But don’t worry—with a little planning (and a lot of flexibility), you can make it through summer at home—and even enjoy it.
1. Set a flexible routine
You don’t need to mimic the school schedule, but having a basic daily structure helps. Break the day into blocks for playtime, movement, reading, screen time, or helping around the house. A gentle routine offers a sense of order without making the day feel too rigid.
2. Create “at-home camps”
Pick a weekly theme—science, art, cooking, nature, you name it. Plan simple experiments, easy recipes, crafts, or scavenger hunts around that theme. Kids will feel like they’re at a real camp without ever leaving home!
3. Get outside whenever possible
Whether it’s the backyard, sidewalk, or a nearby park, fresh air is your best friend. Try water games, spontaneous picnics, or afternoons filled with bubbles and sidewalk chalk.
4. Get them involved in household tasks
Use the extra time at home to teach them useful skills. Making the bed, prepping snacks, watering plants, or folding laundry can be fun with the right attitude—and maybe a little music.
5. Not everything has to be productive
It’s okay for them to be bored sometimes. Boredom sparks creativity. Don’t feel guilty about those unstructured moments—they’re part of what makes summer special.
6. Don’t forget to take care of yourself
Your well-being matters. A calm, rested adult is the best kind of company. Try to carve out at least 15 minutes a day just for you—sip a coffee, read a few pages, stretch, journal, or just take a few deep breaths. It’s not selfish—it’s self-care.
Summer can be messy, sure—but it’s also a chance to make beautiful family memories. Take a breath, go with the flow, and enjoy it. You’ve got this!
