LatinasPgh: A Space of Friendship and Community for Latinas

0 230

LatinasPGH, founded and organized by Brenda García along with a group of volunteers, has created a unique space where Latina women in Pittsburgh can form friendships and strengthen their community. This emerging group organizes events ranging from walks through Frick Park, picnics in Schenley Park, to fun nights at Cavo nightclub, giving its participants the opportunity to connect in a relaxed and supportive environment.

“The best part has been seeing how people become friends. I started this group because I also wanted to make friends,” says García. “It’s about building community and bringing people together. There is a stereotype that we are gossips, but I wanted to show that we can be a community that supports each other.”

Since its first event, which attracted about 75 people, LatinasPGH’s popularity has grown exponentially. Today, its events are constantly attended by more than 80 participants. The growth of group has been mainly organic, thanks to word of mouth and publications on social networks such as Instagram and Facebook. With over a thousand followers on Instagram, LatinasPGH has established itself as a safe and inclusive space for Latina women, offering the opportunity to socialize, relax and enjoy the activities that Pittsburgh has to offer.

Although the group is open to women of all ages, García points out that the majority of participants are between 21 and 50 years old, and in some cases, the events have also been attended by children and teens. Upcoming LatinasPGH events include a guided painting class by muralist Alison Zapata. García has big plans for the future, looking forward to organizing more activities that allow the growing Latino community to feel connected and supported, challenging negative stereotypes and highlighting unity.
