Commonplace Coffee in Squirrel Hill presents the work of Javier Arrieta, an artist whose journey from Nashville to Pittsburgh has shaped his bold, distinctive style. On display until March, this exhibition blends his Colombian heritage with industrial landscapes and surreal elements.
Arrieta describes his artistic process as a personal treasure hunt, drawing from 25 years of photography and a vast collection of images spanning his childhood to the present. Each piece begins with a vision, selecting the perfect photograph to bring it to life, and then evolves into a layered masterpiece that uncovers the hidden beauty in everyday moments and simple things.
[I create] multi-layered photographic compositions that bring together the realms of realism and surrealism. My work is characterized by vivid colors, dramatic shapes, and an added dimension of depth that draws viewers into [a] unique perspective on the world,” says Arrieta.

Javier’s father, a Colombian artist, ignited his passion for creativity through darkroom photography during his youth in Nashville. Later, as a graphic designer, he embraced digital design, crafting a distinctive style that blends realism with surrealist elements.
Arrieta says the art show “showcases the industrial essence of cities, graffiti, and street art.”His unique work, filled with vivid colors and intricate textures, invites you to look beyond the surface and discover the hidden stories within urban and natural scenes.
Running until March 6 at Commonplace Coffee, this exhibition marks a significant milestone for Javier. It showcases his first series since the pandemic. His pieces reflect the unique characteristics of cities like Pittsburgh and Bogotá. One particularly striking artwork, Essential 2, beautifully merges the silhouette of a Colombian miner with the industrial landscape of Pittsburgh, celebrating the rich tapestry of cultural connections.
