Students from Cornell High School and Sto-Rox Junior Senior High School participated in a creative competition to design a mural celebrating their connection to Coraopolis as part of McDonald’s Golden Arches Mural Program.
Supported by local McDonald’s Owner/Operator Sam Nwagbo, the initiative invited high school art students to combine the nostalgia of McDonald’s with their own interpretations of Coraopolis, reflecting their personal connections to the community.
The winning design will be transformed into a five-foot-by-five-foot mural and displayed at the McDonald’s restaurant at 1010 4th Ave. in Coraopolis. Artwork created by other participating students will also be displayed at the restaurant.
As part of the initiative, the student whose design was selected will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The art departments at both participating schools will also receive $500 grants to support future creative projects.
Maria Manautou, founder of Pittsburgh Latino Magazine, was delighted to be invited as one of the judges for the competition, which celebrates student talent, artistic expression and community pride.
“These students poured their hearts into their work, and it shows,” Nwagbo said. “At McDonald’s, we’re proud to support local schools and celebrate the culture and creativity that make Coraopolis such a special place.”
