The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) warned that the Latino community is facing targeted efforts of false and misleading information meant to discourage voting. In a communication it shared
“Misinformation and disinformation schemes aim to deceive, dissuade, and ultimately suppress our voices. This harmful content is widespread on social media, especially on Spanish-language platforms, and can appear on websites, WhatsApp groups, and even in robocalls. New technologies like AI are also being used to amplify this misinformation.
They encourage the community to stay vigilant and informed and are working alongside partners like the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), and Common Cause—to provide Election Protection resources. Anyone with questions or concerns about voting, can call or text the Election Protection Hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE or visit 866ourvote.org.
For resources in Spanish, you can reach out to 888-VE-Y-VOTA (888-839-8682), where bilingual volunteers are ready to assist.
To spot and stop the spread of false voting information LULAC recommends you
- Consider the Source: Verify that information comes from trusted, nonpartisan organizations and credible sources, and make sure it’s up-to-date.
- Call 866-OUR-VOTE: Connect with trained attorney volunteers who can answer questions and provide accurate information.
- Recursos en Español: Contact 888-VE-Y-VOTA for Spanish-language assistance from bilingual attorneys year-round. You can also text “GOVOTE” to 97779 for updates in English or “VEYVOTA” to 97779 for Spanish information.
- Spread the Word: Share the Election Protection Hotline with your community to help protect the integrity of our elections.
- Document Your Concerns: If you encounter misinformation or voting issues, document them at lulac.org/gotv/mi-gente/
election-protection/. Your complaints will go directly to a team of attorneys dedicated to addressing concerns immediately.
“Every vote matters, and every Latino voice is essential in our shared struggle for a brighter future. Let’s stand united, empowering our friends and neighbors with reliable voting information. Our fight for the right to vote is unwavering, and together, we’ll make our voices heard!” shared LULAC CEO Juan Proaño.
